Scarlet Letter Alternate Ending

For this project we had to read the The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne, which was about a women committing adultery and having the whole town despise her for her crime. To top it off she gives birth to a beautiful child that is also despised for her mothers wrong doing. Throughout the whole story, a series of events follow them until the very end.

After reading the book, we had write a creative essay where we had to give it an alternate ending.

Reaching England, passengers disembarked in a rapid manner. Hester Pryne and her little Pearl stayed in the back waiting for Dimmesdale. while waiting they managed to catch a glimpse of Roger Chillingworth observing them, from across the ship.  They dashedto the exit of the ship but they weren't as fast as Chillingworth. "Where are you going my dear Hester?", he said in a corrupt way. “That is none of your concern. She said in strong voice. “Thou shall not mock me, listen to me wisely dear fiend." Roger said holding onto Hesters  arm, before she tried to escape from him. "The time has come for me to rise against your wrongful doing." Hester looked in confusion. "I have waited long enough to get my revenge on thee and your dreaded other. With so much hate, I cannot just let it out on one, but I will need three to satisfy my thirst for revenge!"  Hester looked in horror at what she heard. " You would dare to hurt a child? To my child?    " she said trembling.  "Revenge does many things to a man my dear love, and the possibilities to what I can do are endless." With that, Roger stormed off the boat without looking back. When Dimmesdale finally arrived from the back of the ship, Hester told him everything that happened . They both decided it would be best to move away form their current location. But no matter where they went, it   be enough to keep Roger Chillingworth at bay from them. They would all suffer.

Chillingworth decided to get them all one by one to make them suffer more. His first victim would be the one that caused it all for him. His former companion. As he planned out her death, Roger started to reminisce the good times they had together, when they’re was no hate, no anger, nothing but love, he knew he must do what must be done. It didn't take long for him their hideaway, they moved to the mountains far away from civilization to be secluded and left alone. They were wrong. For a week now he observed her from a distance, watching her every move. One day, when he knew her day daily routine , he made his move. He stayed behind her throughout her daily walk t    o the lake and back. She went alone on these walks to get away from everything that was going on in her life. She was happy with Dimmsdale, but knew it wasnt going to last as long as Chillingworth was still around. On arriving to the destination, Roger made his move. “Art thou alone?” he questioned, “Not the best move dear Hester” She didn’t dare turn around and face the menace. She knew her time was near. “ Behold, what you have created with the sins you have committed!” With that, Chilingworth uncovered a dagger from beneath his cape. Thrusting it into Hester, he held her in his arms for a brief moment, with the little life she had in her, she spoke to him. “Hadst thou no mercy?” And with that, he let go of her onto the rushing water.  The deed was done. With that, he turned and went of whistling into the woods again, planning his next kill.

Before he striked again,he let his victims take in their loss of the beloved Hester. Again they tried moving away from the demon but it was no use, he was always there, watching their every move. He confronted them multiple times, but not to dispose of them, but to give them more fear. He wanted them to suffer as much as possible before he killed them. Dimmesdale never left them alone, he always had an eye on little Pearl. She wasn’t so little anymore; she was fourteen years old now. It was dark, and Dimmesdale knew his time was near, so he told Pearl for her to run when he told her to. He thought they were safe, but he was dead wrong. Around the next corner, he was lurking.  With a sword in  hand, and his cane in another, Roger was there to finish the job.He was getting older and weaker, but that didn’t stop him from finishing what her started many years agoTo kill Dimmesdale once and for all. On seeing him, Dimmesdale stopped and bent down to Pearl's level. “It is time my dear child, leave now child, and remember, don’t stop for anybody. Don’t trust anyone but god.” With that, he kissed her on her forehead and started forward towards Rogers’s direction. Pearl didn’t have any time to say what she wanted to tell her father, that she loved him. Dimmesdale stopped a few steps near Roger. He knelt down and started to recite a prayer. “Dost thou feel guilty for thy sins committed?” Asked Roger as he moved closer to Dimmesdale. He didn’t have enough time to reply. It was over, Dimmesdale was gone. Closer to god he went. On to the last victim for his revenge. Little Pearl.

All these years made Chillingworth more and more into a true demon. He didn’t want anything else but revenge. He ate and slept it. Revenge was the only thing that mattered to him. And at last, he was near an end. Pearl was grown up now, at and age of motherhood. She moved back to her old home, back to where she was born, back to it all. She knew her time was inevitable. Roger will do what he must to her. She started to drink more and more. Her daily business always included going to a bar. Roger couldn’t bear to see her face to face and do away with her. For all these years of suffering he never felt bad for them. But now he did with her. but he was so consumed by revenge, that the feeling soon went away. The last remaining years he changed his physically appearance drastically. He had no more hair. His face was filled with wrinkles. Especially under his eyes because he never slept. He walked into the bar before she went in to get ready for her demise. As soon as she entered he went over to the bar and poured poison on the containers of alcohol when the bartender wasn’t looking. He left soon after that. He knew at least one of those drinks would get to her.

In the end Roger received what he always wanted, to get revenge on those that did him wrong. No matter what or whom in his way. He had nothing else to live for. So he went to the old house in the woods where Hester and Pearl lived. He sat himself on a chair. And slept.  He started to dream about they’re past together. He couldn’t deal with it anymore. He loved her. But he made an oath to make them all suffer for leaving him. He thought taking revenge on them would help him, but it didn’t he just suffered more. So he made a decision and took his life right there and then. He drank the remaining poison and laid back to and endless slumber. Never to wake up.
